À propos

Who is this person?
Me, in a nutshell: a Montreal-based freelance journalist with a penchant for traveling, loud music, cooking, tattoos and learning languages. Me, not in a nutshell:

The journalist
I earned my Bachelor’s degree in journalism from Concordia University in 2007. I was the editor-in-chief of The Link, one of the student newspapers at Concordia, as well as a bureau chief and board member for Canadian University Press. I’ve been freelancing for the Mirror here in Montreal since 2004, and have contributed to a number of publications. For clips, see my Published Work section.

The traveler
I never got to go anywhere as a kid. I mean, I think we went to Malone, NY once for a day at a lake (I don’t like swimming in lakes). I had my first taste of the world outside Montreal when I got to go to New York City in 2001, with my high school graduating class. Since then, I’ve had the absolute privilege of seeing just a little bit more of this big world. International destinations include: St. Petersburg (RU), Moscow (RU), Amsterdam (NL), Paris (FR), London (GB), Dublin (IE), Berlin (DE), Mexico City, Oaxaca and Tijuana (MX). Closer to home, I’ve explored Chicago, Boston, New York City, New Hampshire, San Francisco, LA, San Diego, Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Toronto, Vancouver, Victoria, Ottawa, Edmonton, Cape Breton, Quebec City. I also took the bus from Montreal to Vancouver in 2005 and from Montreal to San Francisco in 2006. You can see some photos in my On the Road section.

The amateur chef
In the past three years, I’ve lost 85 pounds—despite my love of sweets. I’m still a work in progress, with an ultimate goal of losing 125 total. I go to crossfit and rarely eat anything with starches, gluten, dairy and sugar. But, sometimes, I just wanna bake a cake or some cookies. I take great pleasure in creating delicious food and fancy myself a pretty good baker.

The rock & roller
I’ve been to over 500 concerts in the past decade (I’ve lost count—I wouldn’t be surprised if it was upwards of 700 at this point). I’m talking big stadium shows and hole-in-the-wall ones, too. One of my most memorable concert-going experiences was back in 2005, when I got to see Patti Smith perform live at CBGB on May Day in NYC. The show was sold out, and we didn’t have tickets, but a bar bouncer illegally sold us some wristbands for $12, thus allowing one of my fondest music memories to take place. Thanks, sketchy bouncer!

Hi Tracey, Loved your blog – you never know who’s at the end of the BBM line! I’m really impressed with your writing and point of view, and I appreciate your photos too. Do you have any thoughts on the student strike? I know what I think, but I’m curious about your take on it.

Thanks, Leslye. I have some coverage of the strike in the OpenFile section of the Published Work section, but I’d be lying if I said some aspects of my position haven’t changed.
